Racism in the Wake of the Coronavirus Outbreak

Novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is a virus that causes respiratory disease, and was first identified in Wuhan, Hubei, China. It has now spread across mainland China and isolated cases have been identified in 27 other countries.

Fear of the virus has led to incidences of racism against people of Asian descent. Some of these incidents include shunning of Asians, petitions to ban Asian students from schools, racist jokes in the media, refusal to serve Asian customers in stores and restaurants and general reports of rising anti-Chinese sentiment.

The novel coronavirus is believed to have been transmitted from bats to wild animals, whose meats were later consumed by humans. So in addition to the fear of infection from Asian people, this racism also manifests itself in criticisms of Chinese culture, particularly eating habits.

Is it racist or prejudicial to refer to this as the Wuhan virus? How do we prevent the further spread of this virus without instilling prejudice against people of Chinese origin?
