The Cost of Religion in Canada

A recent report (link below) by CFI Canada found that the Canadian government gives 1.58 – 2.6 billion dollars in tax breaks per year to advance religious causes. Some religious groups perform charitable humanitarian work, but the costs of those efforts were subtracted from this report. In other words, this money was spent specifically on the religious groups themselves, and not on helping people in need.

As the Canadian population is growing more secular over time, should we continue to provide subsidies to religion? Does religion have societal value that merits our financial support like arts and culture?
